Making The Most Of Your Cleaner

Updated: Jun 10

Starting the day with the knowledge that your cleaner or housekeeper is coming can bring a sense of anticipation and preparation. It's a good feeling to know that your living space will be straightened up and cleaned, creating a more comfortable and organised environment for the upcoming week. By establishing clear communication and setting expectations from the beginning, you create a foundation for a positive and productive relationship with your cleaner. Here are a few things you might want to consider for a smooth and effective cleaning experience and to get the best results from your cleaner.....

  • Initial meeting - Before hiring a cleaner for your home, schedule an initial meeting with them to discuss your specific needs and expectations. This is always best to do in person at your home. Take this opportunity to walk through your space and highlight any areas of concern or special instructions. I always recommend this as a matter of course.

  • Preparation - Before your cleaner arrives, it's a good idea to do a quick tidy-up. This can involve picking up clutter, putting away items that are out of place and ensuring that surfaces are more clear. This allows for optimal cleaning and the most productive use of your cleaner's time. Most domestic cleaners are hired by the hour and every minute spent tidying and moving clutter is a minute less actual cleaning time for you.

  • Communicate clearly and establish expectations - Clear and effective communication is key to a successful cleaning service experience. If there are specific areas or tasks you want your cleaner to focus on, it's a good idea to communicate those preferences in advance. This helps your cleaner understand your priorities and deliver a service that meets your expectations and requirements. Make sure you're allowing enough time for the size and condition of your home, being realistic about what can be done in your preferred time.

  • Establish a schedule - Set a regular cleaning schedule that works for both you and your cleaner and consider scheduling regular deep cleans. Consistency in the cleaning routine helps maintain a consistently clean environment. I always work with you to try to accommodate days and times that work for you and your family.

  • Feedback loop - I feel it is so important to establish an open feedback loop. If there are specific preferences or changes in your cleaning requirements, communicate them promptly. A proactive approach to communication ensures that your cleaner can adjust their services accordingly. It is always nice to know when you are doing something well but at the same time, it is equally important to know when you are not quite hitting the mark. Keep communicating with your cleaner and let them know if you have any concerns at all.

  • Supplies - Many cleaners will bring their own supplies but if you are supplying them, make sure your cleaner has access to the necessary cleaning products and tools. If there are any special products or equipment they need, have those ready for their use. And make sure you supply them with LOTS of cloths.

  • Access and security - Clearly communicate access instructions and any security protocols for your space. This ensures a smooth and secure entry for your cleaner and avoids any disruptions to your daily routine.

  • Special considerations - If there are specific products or cleaning methods you prefer or if there are any areas/items you want your cleaner to avoid, communicate these preferences in advance.

  • Emergency contact - Provide a reliable contact number in case of emergencies or if your cleaner needs to reach you for any reason.

  • Planning - Knowing that your cleaner is coming can also serve as a reminder to plan your week ahead. You can use this time to set goals, schedule appointments and organise your tasks for the upcoming days.

  • Relaxation - After the cleaning is done, you'll likely enjoy the feeling of walking into a clean and orderly home. Having a cleaner is a helpful way to maintain your living space and can bring a sense of relaxation and calm into your life.
