Starting your day knowing that your cleaner or housekeeper will be arriving can bring a sense of anticipation and readiness. It's reassuring to know that your home will be tidied up and cleaned, making it a more organised and comfortable space for the week ahead. By setting clear expectations and maintaining open communication from the start, you lay the groundwork for a positive and productive relationship with your cleaner. Here are a few things to keep in mind for a smooth, effective cleaning experience and to ensure you get the best results.....

  • Initial meeting - Before hiring a cleaner for your home, it's a good idea to schedule an initial meeting to discuss your specific needs and expectations. Ideally, this should be done in person at your home. During the meeting, take the time to walk through your home and point out any areas that need special attention or any specific instructions you may have. I always recommend doing this as a standard practice.

  • Preparation - Before your cleaner arrives, it's a good idea to do a quick tidy up. This includes picking up any clutter, putting away items that are out of place and clearing surfaces. By doing this, you create a more efficient space for optimal cleaning, allowing your cleaner to focus on the tasks that matter most. Since most domestic cleaners are hired by the hour, every minute spent tidying up or moving clutter means less time dedicated to actual cleaning.

  • Communicate clearly and establish expectations - Clear and effective communication is essential for a successful cleaning service experience. If there are specific areas or tasks you'd like your cleaner to focus on, it's best to communicate those preferences ahead of time. This ensures your cleaner understands your priorities and can provide a service that aligns with your expectations. Additionally, be realistic about the size and condition of your home, and allow enough time for the tasks to be completed within your preferred timeframe.

  • Establish a schedule - Establishing a regular cleaning schedule that works for both you and your cleaner is key, and it's worth considering scheduling occasional deep cleans as well. Consistency in your cleaning routine helps maintain a consistently clean environment. I always aim to work with you to find days and times that fit seamlessly into your family's schedule.

  • Feedback loop - I believe it's crucial to establish an open feedback loop. If your cleaning preferences or requirements change, make sure to communicate them promptly. A proactive approach helps your cleaner adjust their services to meet your needs. It's always nice to hear when you're doing something well, but it's just as important to know when things aren't quite hitting the mark. Keep the lines of communication open with your cleaner and share any concerns you may have - they'll appreciate your honesty and it helps ensure the best possible service.

  • Supplies - Many cleaners will bring their own supplies, but if you're providing them, make sure your cleaner has access to all the necessary cleaning products and tools. If there are any specific products or equipment they require, have those ready for their use. And don't forget to supply plenty of cloths - having enough is essential for an effective cleaning session!

  • Access and security - Make sure to clearly communicate access instructions and any security protocols for your home. This ensures a smooth and secure entry for your cleaner, helping to avoid any disruptions to your daily routine.

  • Special considerations - If you have specific cleaning products or methods you prefer, or if there are certain areas or items you'd like your cleaner to avoid, be sure to communicate these preferences in advance. This ensures your cleaner can tailor their service to meet your needs.

  • Emergency contact - Provide a reliable contact number in case of emergencies or if your cleaner needs to reach you for any reason.

  • Planning - Knowing that your cleaner is coming can also act as a helpful reminder to plan your week ahead. It's a great opportunity to set goals, schedule appointments and organise your tasks for the days to come.

  • Relaxation - After the cleaning is finished, you'll likely appreciate the refreshing feeling of walking into a clean and orderly home. Having a cleaner can be a great way to maintain your living space, bringing a sense of relaxation and calm into your daily life.
