Cleaning Safely

With the growing popularity of cleaning tips and hacks on social media, cleaning safely has become a minefield. We all love a good cleaning hack to remove a stain or create a nice fragrance in our home, however mixing chemicals has very severe health implications as well as causing other issues. As a professional cleaner, I feel I have a duty to educate my followers on best practice when it comes to cleaning. Social media has given rise to tips and tricks and ASMR trends. Videos uploaded to TikTok show content creators mixing products and promoting the use of a product for something other than its intended use. One trend (pictured below) shows content creators filling their toilet bowels with numerous different types of cleaning products, in all different colours. They pile the products on top of one another and then scrub around the toilet bowl, eventually flushing the cleaning products away. But it is so important to use the correct product, in the correct way for the right job! People have literally died from mixing bleach with other cleaning products and inhaling the fumes. Please don't do it!

I put great emphasis on my health as I use cleaning chemicals for hours each day. COSHH training is essential to ensure I really know the products I am working with, their health implications, how much to use, what surface they can be used on and how to act should any chemicals be accidentally mixed. It really is a science lesson with very serious implications if you get it wrong. For example mixing bleach with toilet gel will create a rudimentary mixture for chlorine gas - a very basic mustard gas, as used in WW1. Highly dangerous and the fumes of which will burn your eyes and suffocate you! The number one rule of professional cleaning is to always flush the toilet before applying anything to the bowl - just in case a client has left anything in it. Always have a well ventilated room and if it does happen - get to fresh air as fast and safely as you can!

I have over the years tried many products, done lots of research and listened to the people who are part of the professional body I am a member of. The main bulk of the products I use are not only professional grade cleaning products but also eco-friendly. I have tried and often review lots of the products you can get on the high street but I don't use them on a regular basis when cleaning professionally for many reasons. My health is of great importance and when you are using chemicals all day, every day, it is important to select the ones you are going to use carefully. This of course includes the health of my clients and their pets too, as many chemicals are not safe to be used around animals. Many insurance companies who cover cleaners will not cover them if they are using domestic cleaning products. It may surprise you to know that many insurers exclude claims caused where bleach has been used. Using eco-friendly concentrated products means I can be as kind to the environment as possible whilst still providing the best possible cleaning power. A huge part of the process is also in the cloths I use too.

How I use the products I have is also very important. As I previously mentioned, social media has given rise to trends of mixing chemicals to create pretty colours. Using the correct dosage of concentrated products allows me to put the exact amount of product to water, and not use too much of any product that could leave a residue. Using the right amount of product prevents smears and making surfaces slippery, and also reduces the wear on any surface. If you want to know more, I am a bit of a geek so please just ask - I am always happy to talk products! I am always speaking to advisors and suppliers so I can be up to date and perform best practice in the industry.

A huge difference between a professional cleaner and a general domestic cleaner will be seen in the products they choose to use to clean your home/office/business. It is vital to understand the product you have and are about to put on a surface and with that, knowing what product you are spraying it onto. Not knowing this can have very costly consequences. Knowing how long to leave a product sat on a surface is also something not every cleaner will be aware of. Not long enough and it will not be effective to disinfect and clean, and too long and you could damage a surface.

So stop and think before you start cleaning. Read the labels on your products very carefully and follow the instructions for their correct and safe use. Otherwise your new found enthusiasm for cleaning could do more harm to your home or yourself than good.
